Location

Tatra Mountains, Slovakia

This is the location map for the project

Aims

With the Tatra Foundation, AOTE is removing non-functioning, life-threatening radio collars from previously tagged brown bears in the Tatra Mountains.

Overview

For a 2003 Polish research project, six young brown bears in the Tatra Mountains were tagged with radio collars. On completion of the project, the bears were left to roam free and wild but with the non-self releasing collars still attached.

As the bears grew, the collars tightened around their necks, threatening the lives of the bears. AOTE stepped in, first agreeing with TANAP that the bears would not be harmed if they came into contact with human communities. We then sought to re-capture the bears, using camera traps to locate them, in order to remove the collars, saving the bears’ lives.

Future Actions

Four of the six bears have been rescued. A fifth bear is thought to have relocated to Ukraine and the sixth bear is still unaccounted for. We are continuing to search for the final two bears.
