AOTE’s mission to rescue six collared bears in Slovakia has been a success. Four of the bears, who were collared in their adolescence and were threatened by strangulation if the collars were left in place, were found and de-collared and were showing no signs of stress or ill health. Of the two remaining bears neither was located because the collars were no longer transmitting a location signal, meaning they had likely dropped off. Of the bears spotted in the region where the two remaining bears were tagged, none had collars attached. At the behest of AOTE, TANAP, the Slovak National Park Authority, has banned any further non-essential collaring of bears, wolves or lynx by non-approved parties to avoid a repeat of this situation.
