Around 12 wolves, thought to have relocated from Italy, have been seen in Cadi-Moixero National Park in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain for the first time in several decades. Unfortunately, old prejudices still prevail and farmers in the region are blaming the wolves for an increase in deaths of sheep and young cattle and are demanding the right to shoot the wolves. AOTE is investigating the use of Pyrenean mountain dogs, which are trained to protect livestock from all predators, including wolves. It is a system of livestock protection that has worked in Romania for many years and, if successful, would also provide a solution to livestock/predator conflict in other regions, including snow leopards in Central Asia.
Our work saves wildlife by helping animals and people to co-exist. With our knowledge and experience, we are in a unique position to make a lasting difference. But we can't do it alone. Help us and together we can - and will - make a difference.
