Leo Grillo is a film producer and actor, a passionate conservationist and animal advocate, and is considered an expert in the field of animal rescue by US county, state and federal agencies.
In 1981 he established DELTA Rescue, a not-for-profit organisation that operates a no-kill care-for-life centre for rescued dogs and cats. Today the purpose-built 89-acre ‘super-sanctuary’ is the largest in the world, with its own 2,500 sq. ft. fully staffed veterinary hospital, state-of-the-art physical therapy unit, and fully equipped fire fighting team (to protect the centre from California’s notorious wildfires).
In 1988 Leo helped invent a model animal hemodialysis centre at UC Davis Veterinary Medical Centre and supported the creation of a clinical fellowship in renal medicine and hemodialysis. At the same time, he founded Horse Rescue of America. Then, in 1990, Leo formed Living Earth Productions, a not-for-profit division that produces educational documentaries.
Leo’s international involvement began in 1998 when he set up the International Vet Tech Training Program, which teaches technicians from around the world no-kill care-for-life animal care. In 2000, he funded the construction of a no-kill animal shelter in India and in 2005 he funded a program to feed and medicate street dogs in Romania. The following year he helped establish the first animal shelter in Afghanistan. In 2008, with Chris Weston, Leo established Animals on the Edge as a not-for-profit program of Living Earth.
Through his film work, Leo continues to create and raise awareness of the plight of animals and wildlife, with documentaries such as Pets on Your Plate, which exposes the frightening truth about the practice of animal rendering. He has been a guest on numerous TV shows, news programs and radio broadcasts, including National Geographic, the Today Show, CNN, NBC and Disney TV.
Chris Weston is a professional wildlife photojournalist and co-founder of Animals on the Edge. He has travelled extensively documenting the issues and challenges facing many of the world’s most endangered species and his research forms the basis for our conservation-action White Papers and our emergency funding policy.
Photographically, his work has been published in international media and magazines and he has written twenty-nine books on wildlife and photography, including his most recent title, Animals on the Edge - Reporting from the Frontline of Extinction (available through this website). His prints have been exhibited across Europe and he regularly presents the Animals on the Edge story to sell-out audiences at home and abroad.
In the field, Chris has worked with many leading biologists and his photographs are used extensively in promoting the work of wildlife-centric NGO’s and in educating the global population in the need for effective conservation.
In 2003, in recognition of the quality of his photography and his ethical approach to wildlife, Chris was awarded affiliate membership of the US-based NGO, Canopy – one of only two photographers to receive such an award. And in 2008 he was appointed an Ambassador of the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust.
